Overview
Upper Mustang opened to visitors only in 1992 and remains one of the last strongholds of traditional Tibetan culture. This 12-day journey crosses a trans-Himalayan desert of wind-sculpted cliffs and 10,000-year-old sky caves to the walled city of Lo Manthang, seat of the former Mustang kings.
Because the region lies in the rain shadow of the Himalaya, it is one of the few treks perfect during the monsoon. Jeep support, restricted-area permits and visits to Namgyal and Thubchen monasteries are all included.

Afternoon exploring the lakeside city.
A dramatic mountain flight, then walk to the gateway of Upper Mustang.
Enter the restricted kingdom along the Kali Gandaki.
Cross the Taklam La and Dajori La passes among red cliffs.
Painted chortens and the longest mani wall in Mustang.
Visit the great fortress-monastery of Tsarang.
Arrive at the medieval walled capital of the Lo kingdom.
Tour Namgyal Gompa, the royal palace and the Chhoser sky caves.
Pass the spectacular red cliffs said to be stained by demon's blood.
Long descent past Ghar Gompa, Mustang's oldest monastery.
Final walk down the windy Kali Gandaki.
Two short flights return you to the capital.
